About Barmy Soda

Barmy Soda Company has been producing great-tasting sodas made from all-natural ingredients since 2010 in the vibrant East End of Pittsburgh.

Brendan Benson, owner of Barmy Soda Company, got his start in the soda making business while working as a beer brewer. He thought that a soda option for families would be a nice addition and so he developed a root beer and hoped all would go well.  It did.  The root beer started to fly out the door in glasses, in cans and even in kegs!  After this success he decided to develop a line of sodas that he would want to drink and his first thought was to create a ginger beer - seeing as he had always thought that ginger beers were never spicy enough, a truly spicy ginger beer was what he intended to create.  He did.  Using fresh squeezed ginger and lime juices he created the perfect spicy ginger beer.  It will settle any upset tummy, and it is amazingly refreshing on a hot day not to mention being one heck of a mixer - Moscow Mule anyone?  Or grab some Goslings next time you’re at the store cause we see some Dark and Stormys in your future - extra stormy!

After that Brendan kept experimenting with naturally flavored sodas using fresh squeezed juices and natural sugars in handmade small batches for the next few years developing the current line of sodas.

By 2020 Barmy Soda had expanded it’s sales beyond the brewery to other local bars, restaurants, cafes, universities and grocers and so Brendan made the decision to start canning in-house and solidified the offerings to 3 staple soda flavors: Root Beer, Ginger Beer, & Grapefruit and a line of 6 Seltzers: Hopped, Plain, Grapefruit, Orange, Lime and Lemon with a rotating list of over 10 (and growing) ‘one-off’ flavors using seasonal and local flavors.

Brendan’s goal for the business is to continue to focus on small batch, flavor-forward sodas made with natural ingredients by hand.  In short - he’ll keep making sodas HE wants to drink and hope that YOU want to drink it too!

Fall Flavors with Barmy Soda Co.: Cream Soda & Root Beer

As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to change, nothing captures the spirit of fall better than cozy flavors and comforting drinks. At Barmy Soda Co., we're celebrating the season with two of our fan-favorite flavors: Cream Soda and Root Beer. These sodas are more than just refreshing beverages – they’re crafted using all-natural ingredients, making them perfect for pairing with your favorite fall treats.

Let’s dive into explore delicious ways to enjoy our Root Beer and Cream Soda throughout the season, and provide recipes that will have you embracing autumn one sip (and bite!) at a time.

Fall Pairing Suggestions: Cream Soda & Root Beer

Whether you’re hosting a fall gathering or enjoying a quiet evening at home, Barmy Cream Soda and Root Beer are incredibly versatile for pairing with seasonal foods. Here are some pairing ideas to try this season.

1. Root Beer with Spicy Sausage & Caramelized Onion Pizza

  • Why it works: The sweet, spiced flavor of Barmy Root Beer is a perfect contrast to the savory, spicy sausage and sweet caramelized onions. The richness of the pizza is balanced by the deep notes of our Root Beer, making it a great match for fall.

Recipe: Spicy Sausage & Caramelized Onion Pizza Ingredients:

  • 1 pound spicy Italian sausage, crumbled

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 1 pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce

  • Olive oil for cooking

  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).

  2. Heat olive oil in a pan and cook the onions over medium heat until caramelized, about 20 minutes.

  3. In another pan, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through. Set aside.

  4. Roll out your pizza dough on a floured surface and transfer to a baking sheet or pizza stone.

  5. Spread the tomato sauce over the dough, then top with caramelized onions, cooked sausage, and shredded mozzarella.

  6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly.

  7. Garnish with fresh basil and serve with a cold bottle of Barmy Root Beer!

2. Cream Soda with Caramel Apple Pie

  • Why it works: The smooth vanilla notes of our Barmy Cream Soda perfectly complement the tartness of the apples and the sweetness of the caramel in this classic pie. This pairing creates an indulgent, comforting dessert experience.

Recipe: Caramel Apple Pie Ingredients:

  • 6 cups peeled, sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work best)

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1/4 cup flour

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

  • 1 double pie crust (store-bought or homemade)

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix the apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice.

  3. Roll out the bottom pie crust and place it in a 9-inch pie dish.

  4. Pour the apple mixture into the crust and drizzle with caramel sauce.

  5. Roll out the second crust and place it on top, crimping the edges. Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until the crust is golden and the apples are tender.

  7. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a glass of Barmy Cream Soda for the perfect fall dessert pairing.
